Trade is booming despite disruptions from law enforcement and particularly “exit scams”, in which market admins abruptly close down sites and take all available funds. More than six years after the demise of Silk Road, the world’s first major drug cryptomarket, the dark web is still home to a thriving trade in illicit drugs. Buying drugs on the dark web is often seen as a safer alternative to navigating an unpredictable, adulterated local supply. To put it to the test, a team of researchers analyzed the composition of over 60,000 drug samples—some purchased from the dark web, some bought in-person. The Dark Web refers specifically to websites and services hosted inside Darknets. Search engines do not index these sites and use domains like .onion (for Tor) or .i2p (for I2P).

To this end, we first collected the marketplace’s lifespan using the Gwern archive 37, as shown in Table 1, and then compared the supplier lists in each marketplace to investigate supplier migration. We observed the same listings posted in different marketplaces and illustrate the dependency of the same opioid listings among different marketplaces. Note that we determined if 2 listings are identical by matching the same elements (ie, listing’s title and description information and the vendor’s name) in 2 listings. We observed that the marketplaces of Agora and Evolution shared 530 opioid listings from 290 unique supplier IDs.
