In stepped Empire Market which appeared in February 2018 (about 6-7 months after the demise of AlphaBay/Hansa) and soon became the leader of the Western darknet market ecosystem. The fact that its graphical user interface was built to resemble that of AlphaBay was purposely done to instill a sense of familiarity for users who had become accustomed to AlphaBay. The Dutch national police’s Cyber Enabled Crime Team was involved in the operation, code-named SpecTor. Investigators received leads from local police departments investigating overdose deaths, including that of a 19-year-old man in Colorado who loved learning languages and building his own computers, according to FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate. OFAC’s designation of Parsarad was the result of strong partnership and coordination with the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, FinCEN, and a range of European law enforcement partners.

He then sold the cryptocurrency to Serbia-based peer-to-peer traders in exchange for fiat currency — all in an effort to “clean” his earnings, prosecutors said. The U.S. Department of Justice charged a 33-year-old citizen of Croatia and Serbia with allegedly operating a drug trafficking platform called Monopoly Market on the darknet. Its alleged administrator, a 30-year-old German national who has not yet been named, was cuffed by officers at his apartment in Barcelona, and “measures were taken in Germany and Sweden against one moderator and six of the marketplace’s highest vendors,” officials stated. Nemesis sold all kinds of illegal goods — drugs, compromised data and cybercrime services such as ransomware and tools to conduct phishing or DDoS attacks.
- Officials announced they recovered over two metric tons of drugs, a haul that included a hefty 144 kilograms of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced substances, alongside some 180 firearms.
- Silk Road, AlphaBay, WallStreet and Monopoly Market are all familiar names in the digital graveyard of the dark web.
- It had been operating since 2012 and built up a following of over 100,000 users and more than 100 sellers, mainly from German-speaking countries.
- Launched in 2020, Archetyp was Europe’s longest-serving drug market at the time of its takedown last week, and authorities today confirmed a number of key arrests.
- Its alleged administrator, a 30-year-old German national who has not yet been named, was cuffed by officers at his apartment in Barcelona, and “measures were taken in Germany and Sweden against one moderator and six of the marketplace’s highest vendors,” officials stated.
Many operators have since moved to accepting only Monero (XMR), a privacy coin with features designed to boost anonymity and reduce traceability. Nemesis Market also saw its demise in March, when German authorities seized its infrastructure, along with $102,000 in cryptocurrency. The operation, which took place between June 11 and 13, also targeted the platform’s moderators, top vendors and technical infrastructure, with coordinated raids conducted across Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden, according to a statement by Europol.
- Authorities arrested 123 North Americans, including two in Canada, and a further 58 in Europe; in Germany, authorities arrested 42.
- Archetyp Market, a site on the dark web that sold illegal drugs, has been shut down after police in Europe arrested its administrator.
- According to the charges, Pavey and Hamilton worked together to advertise and sell counterfeit U.S. currency on AlphaBay, a dark web marketplace for illicit goods shut down in 2017.
- In the US, Operation Disruptor plays out across dozens of court documents and around 120 arrests.
- While announced as a package today, the arrests in the US have trickled through over the last several months.
- The seized drugs included 141 pounds of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced narcotics, more than 569 pounds of amphetamines, 95 pounds of cocaine, 95 pounds of MDMA and 22 pounds of LSD and ecstasy pills, authorities said.
The shutdown of Nemesis and the prosecution of its operators “are a further blow to underground economy actors operating on the dark web and demonstrate the effectiveness of international law enforcement in the digital space,” the BKA said in a press release. According to Europol, the resulting takedown took place between June 11 and 13, with the goal of “targeting the platform’s administrator, moderators, key vendors, and technical infrastructure” across the European continent. “Around 300 officers were deployed to carry out enforcement actions and secure critical evidence,” the agency added. Archetyp Market, a site on the dark web that sold illegal drugs, has been shut down after police in Europe arrested its administrator. “It provided us with all the information which led to the identification of those arrested today,” says Europol press officer Claire Georges.
Police Shut Down Long-running Dark Web Drug Market
The indictment charges Pavey and Hamilton with conspiring with each other and others to engage in drug trafficking, computer fraud, access device fraud, counterfeiting, and money laundering. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Authorities in the U.S. and Europe arrested nearly 300 people, confiscated over $53 million, and seized a dark web marketplace as part of an international crackdown on drug trafficking that officials say was the largest operation of its kind. Those arrested had sold drugs on a variety of darknet marketplaces, among them AlphaBay, Empire and DeepSea. A massive international law enforcement operation has seen one of the longest-standing dark web marketplaces finally taken offline.

China-based precursor manufacturers mark the beginning of the synthetic drug supply chain. In years past, these organizations were more overt in their display of such products, openly advertising on mainstream B2B websites. Depending on the severity of the chemical, some manufacturers still follow this practice. While not all are pictured above, in total, we found 16 vendors either selling or sourcing drug material from Abacus and purchasing production supplies from this China-based vendor. While the US market is best characterized by its diverse product offerings, other countries offer regional specialties.

The charges in the superseding indictment are punishable by a maximum sentence of life in federal prison. Today the Justice Department announced criminal charges against five high-ranking members of the United Cartels. Those charged are Juan Jose Farias Alvarez (“El Abuelo); Alfonso Fernandez Magallon (“Poncho”); Luis Enrique…
Darknet Marketplace Nemesis Market Seized By German Police
An example of vendor JoyInc on the Drughub marketplace selling ketamine, MDMA, and bulk options of cocaine on September 4, 2024, is depicted below. JoyInc is believed to have been operating since at least 2018 and is one of the most prolific methamphetamine and cocaine distributors to ever operate on the darknet. The defendants fulfilled drug orders through the various vendor accounts by packaging the drugs into parcels and by delivering those parcels to post offices and mailboxes in Los Angeles County and elsewhere. Others, particularly those based in Russia, focus solely on info stealer hacking tools and brokering stolen data. In another significant case, Brian McDonald of California copped a 20-year sentence after admitting he used various darknet aliases to sling fentanyl and cocaine nationwide. Tragically, investigators linked at least one confirmed overdose death directly to his operation.

Police Seize Millions In Crypto, Cash And Drugs In Darknet Bust
Empire quickly attracted new vendors and buyers and its reliability and features, coupled with low vendor bonds – that is, the cost of signing up as a vendor – a responsive moderator team, and the familiarity of the interface, turned it into a leader. The takedown of Archetyp Market is a clear signal that law enforcement agencies, supported by advanced blockchain intelligence, can disrupt even the most entrenched illicit platforms. But the resilience and evolution of these networks underscore the need for continued cross-border collaboration, technical innovation, and real-time monitoring to stay ahead of the next generation of darknet threats. This year’s law enforcement operation was accompanied by a public awareness campaign called Operation ProtecTor aimed to promote public safety and spread awareness of resources for those struggling with substance abuse and who go through extreme lengths to obtain opioids.

Federal prosecutors have accused the men of operating 10 virtual storefronts on 17 different dark web marketplaces from September 2018 through February, the department said in a statement. In December 2023, the BKA and ZIT seized another major darknet marketplace, the ‘Kingdom Market,’ and arrested one of the administrators in the United States. During the investigation, federal law enforcement seized cryptocurrency valued at $75 million at the time of the seizures and cash and precious metals. According to the charges, Pavey and Hamilton worked together to advertise and sell counterfeit U.S. currency on AlphaBay, a dark web marketplace for illicit goods shut down in 2017.

From June 11 to 13, 2025, law enforcement authorities in Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United States executed a series of synchronized actions targeting the platform’s administrator, moderators, top vendors, and core infrastructure. Approximately 300 officers were deployed to secure digital evidence, seize assets, and arrest key suspects. The takedown was led by German authorities, with Europol and Eurojust facilitating intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and legal cooperation across borders. Archetyp Market, which boasted more than 600,000 users, operated for more than five years and contained more than 17,000 listings for illicit substances, including cocaine, MDMA and amphetamines. Europol also said the market allowed the sale of fentanyl and “other highly potent synthetic opioids.”Authorities seized the site’s online infrastructure, which was hosted in the Netherlands, and arrested its 30-year-old German administrator in Barcelona, Spain.

Dark Web Drug Trafficking
The cyber-policing breakthrough is the latest win for German police, following their disruption in March of Crimemarket, which was previously described as the country’s largest illegal dark web marketplace. The 29-year-old arrested on Monday is accused of acting as technical administrator of Crimenetwork and has been charged with operating a criminal trading platform and dealing in narcotics. The German police’s largest bust came in April 2022, when its investigators disrupted the world’s largest darknet market, Hydra, which had 17,000,000 members and 19,000 registered sellers. The platform only prohibited the sale of child abuse material, contract killing services, weapons, and Fentanyl-based substances. According to the indictment, financial transactions on Empire Market used cryptocurrency to conceal the nature of the transactions and the identities of Empire Market administrators, moderators, vendors, and buyers. Law enforcement shutdowns are also only one type of disruption that dark web communities face.
Unlike Bitcoin, which records every payment on a public ledger, Monero conceals all transaction details by default which makes them nearly impossible to trace. Fraud shops are services found mainly on the dark web that sell stolen data and personally identifiable information (PII), which cybercriminals use for scams, identity theft, and ransomware attacks. In 2024, fraud shop inflows declined by 50% YoY, a sharp downturn from the last three years. Deposits span from the hundreds to the tens of thousands of dollars, and the average deposit amount in 2024 was over $2,000. On-chain data indicates the vendor supplies these drugs to other Chainalysis-identified online pharmacies and DNM vendors, all while maintaining a far-reaching global customer base throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and South America.
The alleged administrator of the marketplace, a 30-year-old German national, was also arrested in Spain. What remains to be seen is whether dark web drug buyers will simply find new suppliers, especially since Operation Disruptor targets individual vendors rather than entire marketplaces. At the very least, though, Tuesday’s announcement may give aspiring dark web vendors pause, as it only adds to law enforcement’s track record of cutting through supposedly anonymous corners of the internet. The Wall Street Market seizure is not the first or even most devastating law enforcement takeover of a dark web storefront.
The US and Europe have seen an increase in nitazine-related overdose deaths in recent years, perhaps due to the halt in the heroin supply following the Taliban’s crackdown. Due to the novelty of these substances (and the fact that many are analogs) the true number of overdoses in Europe could be higher, as forensic drug testing may lag behind the pace of the crisis. German police said they seized the infrastructure of the popular illegal darknet marketplace known as Nemesis and took its website down. Domains for Archetyp have since been replaced with a seizure notice, which indicates law enforcement groups across Europe, in addition to the FBI and US Homeland Security, participated in the investigation.
